Lymphadenectomy is a surgical procedure in which lymph nodes are removed. The most common type of lymphadenectomy is axillary lymphadenectomy, which is performed to remove lymph nodes from the axilla, or armpit. This procedure is often performed as part of breast cancer surgery, as the lymph nodes in the axilla may be involved in the spread of breast cancer.

Surgical Technique

Lymphadenectomy is typically performed under general anesthesia. The surgeon will make an incision in the skin over the lymph nodes to be removed. The lymph nodes will then be dissected free from the surrounding tissue and removed. The incision will then be closed with stitches or staples.

Lymphadenectomy

Lymphadenectomy may be used to diagnose or treat a variety of conditions, including:

  • Breast cancer
  • Melanoma
  • Lymphoma
  • Leukemia

Indications

Lymphadenectomy is indicated when there is a suspicion that lymph nodes are involved in the disease process. For example, lymphadenectomy may be performed if a mammogram or ultrasound shows swollen lymph nodes in the axilla.

Contraindications

Lymphadenectomy is contraindicated in patients with:

  • Active infection
  • Severe bleeding disorders
  • Compromised immune systems

Preoperative Preparation

Before undergoing lymphadenectomy, patients will need to undergo a physical examination and blood tests. Patients may also need to stop taking certain medications, such as anticoagulants.

Surgical Technique

The surgical technique for lymphadenectomy will vary depending on the location of the lymph nodes to be removed. However, the general steps are as follows:

  1. The surgeon will make an incision in the skin over the lymph nodes to be removed.
  2. The lymph nodes will then be dissected free from the surrounding tissue and removed.
  3. The incision will then be closed with stitches or staples.

Postoperative Care

After lymphadenectomy, patients will need to take care of the incision site. This will include keeping the incision clean and dry, and avoiding strenuous activity. Patients may also experience some pain and swelling at the incision site. This can be managed with pain medication and ice packs.

Complications

Lymphadenectomy is a relatively safe procedure, but it does have some potential complications. These complications include:

  • Infection
  • Bleeding
  • Lymphedema
  • Nerve damage
