Everett was a strong supporter of the Union, and he believed that slavery was wrong. He enlisted in the Union Army in 1862 and was assigned to the 1st Michigan Engineers and Mechanics Regiment. Everett's regiment was sent to the front lines in Virginia, and he soon saw combat. He was a brave and skilled soldier, and he quickly rose through the ranks.
In July 1863, Everett's regiment was sent to Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. The Battle of Gettysburg was one of the most important battles of the Civil War, and it was a turning point in the war. Everett's regiment was heavily engaged in the fighting, and he was wounded in the shoulder. Despite his wound, Everett continued to fight, and he helped his regiment to victory.
After the Battle of Gettysburg, Everett was captured by the Confederates. He was held as a prisoner of war for nine months, and he was subjected to harsh treatment. However, Everett never gave up hope, and he eventually escaped from prison. He made his way back to Union lines and was reunited with his regiment.
Everett was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions during the war. He was a brave and skilled soldier, and he was a true hero. He fought for what he believed in, and he made a difference in the world.
Everett returned home to Michigan after the war and resumed his studies. He graduated from medical school and became a doctor. He practiced medicine for many years and was a respected member of his community. Everett died in 1920 at the age of 79.
