Early Life and Military Career

Charles André Joseph Marie de Gaulle was born on November 22, 1890, in Lille, France. He was the son of a Catholic family and received a traditional education. De Gaulle exhibited a strong sense of patriotism and military ambition from an early age. In 1912, he graduated from the prestigious École Spéciale Militaire de Saint-Cyr and began his military career.

During World War I, De Gaulle distinguished himself as a brave and skilled officer. He was wounded three times and received the Croix de Guerre for his valor. After the war, he served in various military positions and developed a reputation as a brilliant strategist.

World War II and the Free French Forces

With the outbreak of World War II in 1939, De Gaulle was appointed commander of the 4th Armored Division. He played a key role in the Battle of France, but the French army was quickly overwhelmed by the German invasion. After the fall of France in June 1940, De Gaulle escaped to London and established the Free French Forces.

As the leader of the Free French Forces, De Gaulle became a symbol of French resistance against the Nazi occupation. He broadcast speeches on the BBC, rallying the French people to continue the fight. The Free French Forces fought alongside the Allies in various campaigns, including the North African landings and the D-Day invasion.

Post-War Leadership and the Fifth Republic

After the liberation of France in 1944, De Gaulle returned to Paris as a national hero. He served as the provisional president of France from 1944 to 1946. During this time, he oversaw the reconstruction of France and the creation of a new constitution.

In 1958, France faced a political crisis due to the Algerian War. De Gaulle was called upon to form a new government and granted emergency powers. He drafted a new constitution, which established the Fifth Republic and gave the president a strong executive role. De Gaulle was elected as the first president of the Fifth Republic in 1959.
