Magnus crosses the Rubicon River, an act that traditionally signifies a declaration of war against Rome. He marches on Rome and deposes Theodosius's young son, Honorius. Magnus is now emperor of the Western Roman Empire.

Rubicon is a thrilling and suspenseful novel that chronicles Magnus's rise to power. Holland does an excellent job of bringing the characters to life and creating a sense of historical authenticity. The novel is also a valuable resource for anyone who wants to learn more about the late Roman Empire.

Aquila

The second novel in the trilogy, Aquila, follows Magnus as he struggles to maintain his grip on power. The Eastern Roman Empire, ruled by Theodosius's other son, Arcadius, is hostile to Magnus. And within the Western Roman Empire, there are many who resent Magnus's usurpation of the throne.

Magnus faces a series of challenges, including a rebellion by his own general, Stilicho. But Magnus is a resourceful and determined leader. He is able to overcome his enemies and maintain his position as emperor.

Aquila is a gripping and action-packed novel that explores the complexities of power and leadership. Holland does an outstanding job of portraying Magnus as a flawed but ultimately sympathetic character.

Invictus

The third and final novel in the trilogy, Invictus, tells the story of Magnus's downfall. The Eastern Roman Empire invades the West, and Magnus is forced to flee. He seeks refuge among the barbarians, but they eventually betray him.

Magnus is captured and executed in 388 AD. His death marks the end of the Western Roman Empire as a unified political entity.

Invictus is a tragic and moving novel that explores the themes of ambition, betrayal, and redemption. Holland brings the trilogy to a satisfying , while also providing a thought-provoking meditation on the nature of power.

The Magnus Maximus Trilogy is a must-read for anyone who is interested in Roman history or historical fiction. Tom Holland is a master storyteller, and his novels are both entertaining and informative. The trilogy provides a vivid and immersive account of a fascinating period in history.
