The programme is designed to provide trainees with the knowledge and skills necessary to become competent ophthalmic surgeons. The curriculum covers all aspects of ophthalmology, including medical retina, surgical retina, glaucoma, cataract surgery, oculoplastics, and paediatric ophthalmology.

Trainees are assessed on a regular basis throughout the programme. The assessment process includes written exams, oral exams, and clinical assessments. Trainees are also required to complete a research project and write a thesis. Upon successful completion of the programme, trainees are awarded a Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training (CCST).

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the Oxford Specialty Training Programme in Ophthalmology, you must:

  • Be a registered medical practitioner with the General Medical Council (GMC).
  • Have completed at least two years of foundation training.
  • Have passed the Membership of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (MRCOphth) Part 1 exam.
  • Have a strong academic record.
  • Be able to demonstrate a commitment to ophthalmology.

Curriculum

The Oxford Specialty Training Programme in Ophthalmology is a six-year programme. The curriculum is divided into three phases:

  • Phase 1 (2 years): This phase focuses on the basic sciences of ophthalmology and the development of clinical skills. Trainees rotate through a variety of placements, including medical retina, surgical retina, glaucoma, and oculoplastics.
  • Phase 2 (2 years): This phase focuses on the development of surgical skills. Trainees spend the majority of their time in the operating theatre, performing a variety of procedures under the supervision of experienced consultants.
  • Phase 3 (2 years): This phase focuses on the development of subspecialty expertise. Trainees choose a subspecialty area and spend the majority of their time in that area. The subspecialty areas available include medical retina, surgical retina, glaucoma, oculoplastics, and paediatric ophthalmology.

Assessment

Trainees are assessed on a regular basis throughout the programme. The assessment process includes:

  • Written exams: Trainees take written exams at the end of each phase of the programme. The exams cover the basic sciences of ophthalmology, clinical skills, and surgical skills.
  • Oral exams: Trainees take oral exams at the end of each phase of the programme. The exams cover the same material as the written exams.
  • Clinical assessments: Trainees are assessed on their clinical skills on a regular basis. The assessments are conducted by experienced consultants.
  • Research project: Trainees are required to complete a research project and write a thesis. The thesis is submitted for examination at the end of the programme.

Career Prospects

Upon successful completion of the Oxford Specialty Training Programme in Ophthalmology, trainees are awarded a Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training (CCST). This qualification allows them to practice as independent ophthalmic surgeons. CCST holders can work in a variety of settings, including hospitals, clinics, and private practice.

Ophthalmology is a rewarding and challenging career. Ophthalmic surgeons have the opportunity to make a real difference to the lives of their patients. They can help people to see the world more clearly, and they can prevent or treat serious eye diseases.

If you are interested in a career in ophthalmology, the Oxford Specialty Training Programme is an excellent option. The programme provides trainees with the knowledge, skills, and experience necessary to become competent ophthalmic surgeons.
