The Gates of Paradise, also known as the Ghiberti Doors, are a pair of bronze doors located in the east end of the Florence Baptistery in Florence, Italy. They are considered to be one of the masterpieces of the Italian Renaissance, and are widely regarded as the most important piece of bronze sculpture ever created.

The doors were commissioned by the Arte di Calimala, the guild of wool merchants, in 1401. They were designed and cast by Lorenzo Ghiberti, who worked on them for 21 years. The doors are made of gilded bronze and are divided into 10 panels, each of which depicts a scene from the Old Testament.

The panels are arranged in two rows of five, with the central panel in the bottom row depicting the Creation of Adam. The other panels depict the following scenes:

  • The Creation of Eve
  • The Expulsion from Eden
  • The Sacrifice of Cain and Abel
  • The Flood
  • The Tower of Babel
  • The Meeting of Abraham and Melchizedek
  • The Sacrifice of Isaac
  • The Dream of Jacob
  • The Story of Joseph

The doors are a masterpiece of Renaissance sculpture, and are renowned for their beauty, detail, and craftsmanship. They are also a testament to the skill and artistry of Lorenzo Ghiberti, who is considered to be one of the greatest sculptors of all time.

The Gates of Paradise today

The Gates of Paradise are still in place in the Florence Baptistery, where they continue to be admired by visitors from all over the world. They are one of the most popular tourist attractions in Florence, and are a must-see for anyone interested in art or history.

In 1990, the doors were removed for restoration work. They were returned to the Baptistery in 2002, and are now protected by a glass enclosure.
